How to eat out on a cut
Eating out doesn’t have to break a calorie deficit. These are practical ways to order, with real numbers from official restaurant nutrition guides.
1. Know your numbers before you go
Decide your daily calories and protein first. TableMacros’ calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and adjusts for your goal (about −500 cal a day is roughly 1 lb a week), with protein set at 0.8 g per pound of body weight. Talk to a professional before an aggressive diet.
2. Build the meal around protein
Protein-first orders keep you full for the calories. Look for grilled chicken, lean beef, “protein bowl” or lettuce-wrap versions, and salads with a grilled protein.
3. Skip the breading
Example from Popeyes’ official guide: 5 pieces of Blackened Tenders are 280 cal with 47 g protein, while 5 Classic or Spicy Tenders are 650 cal with 58 g protein. Same chicken, no breading: 370 fewer calories.
4. Count the dressing and sauce
Most chains list dressings separately from the salad. At Chick-fil-A, the official dressings range from 25 cal (Light Italian Dressing) to 310 cal (Avocado Lime Ranch Dressing) per packet. Using half, or choosing a lighter one, can save a few hundred calories.
5. Plan the whole day, not just one meal
If dinner is out, keep breakfast and lunch lighter and protein-heavy. TableMacros’ Plan my day builds breakfast, lunch and dinner from chains near you to hit your targets, and can subtract what you’ve already logged.
