How to read a restaurant nutrition guide
A chain nutrition guide is a table of items as the restaurant defines them. The useful skill is matching the row to the food, then adding the rows the table left out.
Match the name, not the photo
Guides list "grilled," "crispy," "kids," "small," and "with dressing" as different items. The photo on the menu board is not the row. Read the item name in the PDF or on the item page until it matches what you will say at the counter.
See what one serving is
A row might be one piece, one packet, one sandwich, or a whole platter. Protein and calories are for that serving. Five pieces are not the one-piece row multiplied in your head unless you also check that the guide's 5-piece row agrees. When the guide publishes both, use the row for the count you ordered.
Popeyes publishes both. Five Blackened Tenders are 280 calories and 47 g protein. Five Classic or Spicy Tenders are 650 calories and 58 g protein (Popeyes nutrition guide, September 2026). The piece count matches. The breading does not. Log the row that names the breading you ordered.
Sauces and sides are often missing on purpose
Many salad and sandwich rows exclude the dressing, the biscuit, and the drink. Those have their own lines. Chick-fil-A's dressing packets are a clear case: Light Italian Dressing is 25 calories, and Avocado Lime Ranch Dressing is 310 calories, per packet (Chick-fil-A nutrition and allergens, checked Oct 14, 2026). Adding the ranch packet is a different meal from the salad row alone.
Build-your-own is a sum of rows
Bowls, burritos, and subs are often listed as components: base, protein, salsa, cheese, crema. Add the components you ask for. Do not use a "signature bowl" row if you changed the protein or skipped the crema, unless the guide has a row for that exact build. If a component is not in the guide, stop. You do not have a published total. See how to estimate a meal for what to do next, without inventing the missing line.
Then track it
Once the rows match the plate, write down calories, protein, carbs, and fat for those rows only. How to track macros when eating out is the logging step. Chain pages on this site repeat published orders and link each chain's guide.
See the source on the order
TableMacros keeps the chain's nutrition source on the pick, so you can open the same guide before you order. Finding an order stays free.
