How to track macros when eating out

A restaurant meal is trackable when the chain publishes a nutrition guide. Use that guide for the item as served. Do not fill in a calorie count for a dish the restaurant has not published.

1. Set the day's calories and protein before you order

Decide the calories and protein for the day, then a share for this meal. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner do not have to be equal. If you already ate, subtract that from the day before you pick dinner. TableMacros can do that split from the targets you enter. This page does not assign you a target.

2. Open the chain's nutrition guide

Search the restaurant name plus "nutrition" and use the PDF or item page the chain publishes. Log the row whose name matches what you ordered. A grilled sandwich and a crispy sandwich are different rows. A bowl and the same bowl with a tortilla are different rows.

Two published comparisons, copied from those guides and not calculated here:

3. Add every line that is not already in the item

Sauces, dressings, sides, biscuits, and drinks are often their own rows. If you eat them, add those rows. If you skip them, leave them out. "On the side" still counts if you use it.

4. Log what you ate, including half

If you eat half the entree, log half of the published numbers for that row. If you leave the fries, do not log the fries. A custom meal you type in from a label in front of you is your number, and it should stay marked as yours rather than as the chain's.

More on the same idea: how to read a restaurant nutrition guide and how to estimate a meal when no guide exists. For orders already totaled from official guides, see high-protein fast food under 500 calories.

Track the order in front of you

TableMacros uses each chain's published nutrition and links the source on the pick. Finding an order and logging it stay free.

Figures are the chain's published values for the named item, as served. Sauces, sides, and drinks are extra unless the item name includes them. Menus change. Check the source before you order.
